The owner of the bus was outside, and this felt like a great opportunity to meet someone new. Luke and I hit it off right away, and he offered to make a video of me doing a spoon carving demonstration I was planning. Besides being a wonderful, kind human being, Luke is a video blogger and web designer travelling the country while learning how to be more fully alive. Check out his <a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCoSRCiL-hC2856-JXCFQkiA" target="_blank">videos</a> on his YouTube channel! </p><p>When I started to ride off after our meeting I remembered I'd said to myself that the next person I had the opportunity to get a picture taken by I would ask. So I went back and Luke got this nice picture of me with my unusual bicycle luggage system. </p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzmgsrBP7kNrMowLVH_AWmg3YPfoxsqKsOT9vaXqy93HyTW4b0XhGSsuK7lZ4UJ99mS0c_hTqtDQf_efcl0HJ_leApzvVrt1eoKMTq8TVFV2dwy3-z9_SjTyPLmM5wgjtqMktV8qw_qCM/s1681/spoondemo2.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1681" data-original-width="1537" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzmgsrBP7kNrMowLVH_AWmg3YPfoxsqKsOT9vaXqy93HyTW4b0XhGSsuK7lZ4UJ99mS0c_hTqtDQf_efcl0HJ_leApzvVrt1eoKMTq8TVFV2dwy3-z9_SjTyPLmM5wgjtqMktV8qw_qCM/s320/spoondemo2.jpg" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p>The wood came from a huge sycamore growing near where we had breakfast on the side of the road the morning of a spoon carving demonstration I was doing at <a href="https://www.backfencesociety.com/" target="_blank">Backfence Society</a> in Vista. I was not able to get a fresh branch, but found one recently fallen that I selected a good section from. The wood was harder to work because of how dry it was, and doing the axe work took the full two hours of the demo. I was able to finish the clean up knife work the same day, and eventually finished it on a special visit to Luke at his bus where he was parked on Fiesta Island. It was presented to him as a gift that day. </p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgw0x07I1Td0K9I4HSJdd6f-p-HtQUMRp9cFkhsBnG-_TOAhfzbcnxzHA_FRtSblMe74e_O8VQMDob-87X2C8UN98aDqpkr2cGarcw1MisKuax4LCdKAty9QYLQY9mGce8Bbs9yyFJ96QA/s1044/sycamoreserving07.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; The wood is crab apple, given to me by my spoon carving teacher on Orcas Island, who has an abundance of nifty woods around his shop to toss my way when I visit. It took the kolrosing really well, which was perfect for the curvy design I decided to put on this spoon. </p><p>What do you see in this picture? What does it symbolize for you? To me it speaks of God and Gaia. The Love behind it all and the sturdy Mother of our bodies that He shines through. There are so many ways to depict the oneness! The image of Her came first, and the rest was spontaneous as I worked the drawing on the spoon handle with pencil. Thank you Creator!</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg07_Rq7k69Q6ReJhjvvutUZo-xvpCYtaTFX3vgUd4mUEW7Brs29k1_g9J9s5nV4Lo1R9DBdDRLAHKRrTwLwfDvsePwiP3rs2IPE7kZsIIKdnoZl5REA3gk4dq6bJaoqhJ_lDCzICkOa4A/s1070/KristaCrabapple01.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1070" data-original-width="1000" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg07_Rq7k69Q6ReJhjvvutUZo-xvpCYtaTFX3vgUd4mUEW7Brs29k1_g9J9s5nV4Lo1R9DBdDRLAHKRrTwLwfDvsePwiP3rs2IPE7kZsIIKdnoZl5REA3gk4dq6bJaoqhJ_lDCzICkOa4A/s320/KristaCrabapple01.jpg" /></a></div><br /><p>photo by Ron Hurley</p>davis awakehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08474955153102246697noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-919199418372917245.post-41078069557025615442020-10-05T15:18:00.001-07:002020-10-05T15:18:16.716-07:00kolrosed mountain ash<p> </p><p>Playing with some kolrosing! She said it was hawthorn. I thought that was unlikely because I have only known hawthorn to grow up north. She later found pictures online and it looks like it is an indian hawthorn, which is different from the English ones I know. The wood carves much differently, more like cherry, and the color is similar to cherry as well. This one I allowed to go longer in the toaster, so it got quite dark, and obscured the wood grain patterns. I made three small lines by kolrosing on the neck, which can barely be seen after the toasting. The shape of the bowl is inspired by the spoons of <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g26JmIDpO0E" target="_blank">Adam Hawker</a>. </p><p>I've been playing around with how to soften the sharp corner on the back of the handle for the comfort of the hand. In this case I made an angle cut all the way along it and carried it into a facet curving to the edge of the bowl. He couldn't help but think of Davis, the spoonmaker, who was always looking for new wood to carve into beautiful spoons...</p><p>So I roughed out a blank from this wood, having a certain design for the handle in mind inspired by many metal spoons I have enjoyed with this upward swooping end. Then it dried out and sat and sat until I retrieved it on my sport visit back to the San Juans in the end of August. Sometimes it just comes as a surprise when these spoons come into being. I was really happy with how this one came out!</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhx8pGfl3P_09bmrBlemzlPIf9cA8Lqys9WRDrlw3u8DFAdbBTO3LuTkE-hmejCmEbXgzB2CQDYZjbrSS5X2A46QHtAQ-ZDdkssZzqXggcdcn08rf2Se-CY-3SdHkn7SLm_jKwsZQEgigY/s750/20200921_085247.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; It is now in the hands of my brother Learner. This one is completely knife finished, which is unusual for the bowl of the eating spoons I carve. I think this is the first one on which I carved the spine ridge. It is a very sturdy spoon, which matches my brother's sturdy character.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhy70ZJ5CrmC8I508qWmgC05Stim4mWLV7n5oA77MtZd4nh5uv7B4rVH002R4vcTgbf5pWk_20XrKzVJs_jugsS3sGUqiOwfTg0pBiZoolj_Uw5A4tHImzqHi7-wNyG_PyXHv1a0VRA3Rw/s1024/Porridgespoon1.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="768" data-original-width="1024" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhy70ZJ5CrmC8I508qWmgC05Stim4mWLV7n5oA77MtZd4nh5uv7B4rVH002R4vcTgbf5pWk_20XrKzVJs_jugsS3sGUqiOwfTg0pBiZoolj_Uw5A4tHImzqHi7-wNyG_PyXHv1a0VRA3Rw/s320/Porridgespoon1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFzDP_0o-gB-Cnb7WPerudkSZV82xp8qRG-54ltxmbmmFC6k7DanZjalR8LPhDnQBuWPIQWgLLJMiM7VAuQq8EhHxep1X17HHfWq0PqIw0xXgD2vPo7O19Jt2ddl8Ep5mdIET8jdgxI6E/s706/Porridgespoon2.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="705" data-original-width="706" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFzDP_0o-gB-Cnb7WPerudkSZV82xp8qRG-54ltxmbmmFC6k7DanZjalR8LPhDnQBuWPIQWgLLJMiM7VAuQq8EhHxep1X17HHfWq0PqIw0xXgD2vPo7O19Jt2ddl8Ep5mdIET8jdgxI6E/s320/Porridgespoon2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQSpgsxtE1qswguyBjVFeCkX8Ea-OLTladJumLfKuFpssUT4putcyRGBfCyvcASKK1ACeJYDSOBakVFyGUD2Ju0VOc1v_rRIBc2dD97zmgeU5UFUWaIWL0jhAn3Xc4IzR1VoQ24ypZmeM/s768/Porridgespoon3.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="768" data-original-width="768" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQSpgsxtE1qswguyBjVFeCkX8Ea-OLTladJumLfKuFpssUT4putcyRGBfCyvcASKK1ACeJYDSOBakVFyGUD2Ju0VOc1v_rRIBc2dD97zmgeU5UFUWaIWL0jhAn3Xc4IzR1VoQ24ypZmeM/s320/Porridgespoon3.jpg" /></a></div><br /> <p></p>davis awakehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08474955153102246697noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-919199418372917245.post-88623379820846761832020-09-21T09:00:00.000-07:002020-09-21T13:34:05.563-07:00red shank <p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">This unusually colorful wood came from the place of a friend who had me out to work with him and visit this summer. The land is near Anza, California, East of Temecula. Red shank is one of the dominant native shrubs there, and some of the ones near the house of my friend Randy are quite large, which makes for good spoon wood. The trunk I selected was partly dead, so I figured it was more expendable than the more vigorous parts of the plant. Fortunately the dead wood added huge amounts of character and beauty to this spoon! Some large cracks remained when it was complete, and I filled them with red brick dust during the curing, hoping the cracks would close and seal the dust in as they cooled. The idea came from my recent experience with <a href="https://www.canadianwoodworking.com/tipstechniques/kolrosing-wooden-spoon-classic-basket-weave" target="_blank">kolrosing</a>. What was most surprising and remarkable to is the 'curly' quality of the wood revealed int he bowl once sanded. Like waves in the wood. Gives the wood a whole other dimension.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHL1H-Rn9TzbDcsRiT4uEeNfEEfTW4nhFO-jq3oyp4SJXR53Qx5gncXjYESel6URyv0gQQnhuQOuFGNmrOJZdbeXr8CwHGQDV1qukBQx25Y4prGU7cwPlMW-3XnZLWiz1dhvbLnWKXEWQ/s930/redshank01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="598" data-original-width="930" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHL1H-Rn9TzbDcsRiT4uEeNfEEfTW4nhFO-jq3oyp4SJXR53Qx5gncXjYESel6URyv0gQQnhuQOuFGNmrOJZdbeXr8CwHGQDV1qukBQx25Y4prGU7cwPlMW-3XnZLWiz1dhvbLnWKXEWQ/s320/redshank01.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHRgjDkUw7ViqVJye86ucuNz5ufJ0RauUchO8UgTXz9m93Ra84dcBNY7ZxtSlwLFOT22tTfAuaU-aXMu5oiHSY4oKLNQWuQCSwJWxKBV_UkKPlrH11FWCcd6HIU3JBp7Ut1P3N5qKl6-M/s880/redshank02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="456" data-original-width="880" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHRgjDkUw7ViqVJye86ucuNz5ufJ0RauUchO8UgTXz9m93Ra84dcBNY7ZxtSlwLFOT22tTfAuaU-aXMu5oiHSY4oKLNQWuQCSwJWxKBV_UkKPlrH11FWCcd6HIU3JBp7Ut1P3N5qKl6-M/s320/redshank02.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdIxVca4UsyGAcse-1ZfQPP9qz-tk6BqjqMNtggNx9oStPQehQJ8rzRyAE0J6IXWKd-0nPo9egUXZKFojIu9Lvcxin6VxtpUqM1JvoSBvgkMiK1J7U3TdsuhunLZ6ppjfrIMUUsHU0PHc/s996/redshankandolive01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="747" data-original-width="996" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdIxVca4UsyGAcse-1ZfQPP9qz-tk6BqjqMNtggNx9oStPQehQJ8rzRyAE0J6IXWKd-0nPo9egUXZKFojIu9Lvcxin6VxtpUqM1JvoSBvgkMiK1J7U3TdsuhunLZ6ppjfrIMUUsHU0PHc/s320/redshankandolive01.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /> <p></p>davis awakehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08474955153102246697noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-919199418372917245.post-58384396275088478882020-09-20T23:32:00.002-07:002020-12-24T20:43:04.142-08:00orange cooking spoon<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">While living at Collin's place, Hawk'in'eye Haven, I met a neighbor who hired me for some work on their land. The day I met Rick he was cutting some orange wood, and he said he would bring me a good section for making spoons. He commissioned one out of this wood for his mother Joan, who requested a long-handled spoon for stirring. The wood was delightful to carve and the spoon came out beautifully! I've decided to leave these serving spoons I'm doing these days unsanded, which we call knife finished. It is less work and is sufficient for a spoon that does not go in the mouth as often. If the knife can get the surface smoothe it will actually stay more smoothe with a knife finish than a sanded one.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgssbeW9FvlF9aWxvRplDEWI12JIfzsEwXTXihjFpNffgKesL0jfdUGMYEUBToxf098OGWg81-NsKObUcC4khmPNqlG6ROuGvKmWHsUWMAHym4JF4rnhyphenhyphenktvi9PhvUYkzwJ9I6Pwr4jd5U/s768/orangejoan01.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="768" data-original-width="768" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgssbeW9FvlF9aWxvRplDEWI12JIfzsEwXTXihjFpNffgKesL0jfdUGMYEUBToxf098OGWg81-NsKObUcC4khmPNqlG6ROuGvKmWHsUWMAHym4JF4rnhyphenhyphenktvi9PhvUYkzwJ9I6Pwr4jd5U/s320/orangejoan01.jpg" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimTBifcBLH44hpw5FTgGLSKnwjWJlA4j7ny1NHatWSVAe9rW8iiCigizy7nOxobCAAPzy6roeDmkmjdft92A_CQx2toAMLl_1c-oBTtzH9seJj96RYO66dOnW3Tkchlif3fijpyBKKels/s768/orangejoan02.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="768" data-original-width="768" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimTBifcBLH44hpw5FTgGLSKnwjWJlA4j7ny1NHatWSVAe9rW8iiCigizy7nOxobCAAPzy6roeDmkmjdft92A_CQx2toAMLl_1c-oBTtzH9seJj96RYO66dOnW3Tkchlif3fijpyBKKels/s320/orangejoan02.jpg" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMTRbIXOLY5tNE8mi_OHOzww27E4H4H95THksnRUjL7n07anTwpC4vrV4NptDjCR6BfnPdvDp1aa6-Zv1CKl3rWrBF8TwAUSs8OcnAJhvMxsDi7BWEGOyf679Fzo8HOYWpPbSXo_r1RiA/s768/orangejoan03.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="548" data-original-width="768" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMTRbIXOLY5tNE8mi_OHOzww27E4H4H95THksnRUjL7n07anTwpC4vrV4NptDjCR6BfnPdvDp1aa6-Zv1CKl3rWrBF8TwAUSs8OcnAJhvMxsDi7BWEGOyf679Fzo8HOYWpPbSXo_r1RiA/s320/orangejoan03.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYpeKmbf4BhqKttP0RSf0EZSSKRLxn_bERS8kwX1ZoHYD0irWUAFA-xsb7caqfxwEgFNcKW3VvZFJ65MCEFnOOZ64oTkJAnp5FwPCwjrHX6zh8CEK1Him-EsOqU8A37uzz8kOH_lAwJKI/s717/orangejoan04.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="523" data-original-width="717" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYpeKmbf4BhqKttP0RSf0EZSSKRLxn_bERS8kwX1ZoHYD0irWUAFA-xsb7caqfxwEgFNcKW3VvZFJ65MCEFnOOZ64oTkJAnp5FwPCwjrHX6zh8CEK1Him-EsOqU8A37uzz8kOH_lAwJKI/s320/orangejoan04.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /> <p></p>davis awakehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08474955153102246697noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-919199418372917245.post-59131721622093812222020-09-20T21:36:00.000-07:002020-09-20T21:36:18.619-07:00alder serving spoon<p> </p><p>While on Lopez Island before coming down to California I roughed out a couple blanks from willow and alder I'd gotten from a friend's place. While I was living with my friends at their lovely home in Valley Center I took some time to complete spoons from them. This alder serving spoon was much-needed in a kitchen without many of this size, and few wooden utensils overall. These friends Collin and Rivkah were very hospitable to me, and I was happy to make a contribution to their good life there.</p><p>I've been loving this spine ridge that has come into a few of the recent designs. It adds a sense of continuity as it extends the line from the neck, and reminds me of hand carved wooden canoes of olden times. The rings were close and the way the grain patterns showed up on this spoon was especially beautiful.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpFs9_7TFloXpBFptbu1OyOvrSTysYbmp3RgNPxs_vGgitsyWn0VierDEkZKYROiGtRR6Mx88K1yu7KBvEIXOanZXa8PH47qV-yJ1SZBLDEXO4rZUqIgyfkAymBGpzW4Uej1M0yk6pcck/s1024/alderserving1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1024" data-original-width="768" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpFs9_7TFloXpBFptbu1OyOvrSTysYbmp3RgNPxs_vGgitsyWn0VierDEkZKYROiGtRR6Mx88K1yu7KBvEIXOanZXa8PH47qV-yJ1SZBLDEXO4rZUqIgyfkAymBGpzW4Uej1M0yk6pcck/s320/alderserving1.jpg" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoUQt_-D5JEC5yZc7JYMGBczkybJjwsSPbA1OaougOj9DvOtNm4V3Th-hH3PLHokDp7bRDb-BAlBZbd4-mJ5wIkJyn5jyXd7W8lfQyinCWKcbIR_tl7YoyJn6IO8FL-76lSydT9Z9L3YE/s1024/alderserving2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="768" data-original-width="1024" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoUQt_-D5JEC5yZc7JYMGBczkybJjwsSPbA1OaougOj9DvOtNm4V3Th-hH3PLHokDp7bRDb-BAlBZbd4-mJ5wIkJyn5jyXd7W8lfQyinCWKcbIR_tl7YoyJn6IO8FL-76lSydT9Z9L3YE/s320/alderserving2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdbnZLoAap7Za7KneaiOoShyP9q-371gO15f-y3Evb_nn-7EG_LoqRpjkzJ5dAju1wzsLSe5mWqKYc_blGFDqZzxjVSW_hs4u0jjyK8Q6bCZHuadkoxZc-9vHxQ_c18Pl7jmDM1CVDK8M/s1024/alderserving3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="768" data-original-width="1024" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdbnZLoAap7Za7KneaiOoShyP9q-371gO15f-y3Evb_nn-7EG_LoqRpjkzJ5dAju1wzsLSe5mWqKYc_blGFDqZzxjVSW_hs4u0jjyK8Q6bCZHuadkoxZc-9vHxQ_c18Pl7jmDM1CVDK8M/s320/alderserving3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5gpVTmMGlm0FrR1qxyxvcyy3rEU7oABAU6TT5l743X_nR4Pkog560IuE1E-M5CYIQI1PP0d9fhY8lxRijezCU_3d7FygQdqAIap9NtzDDHDTgBrhQr4_ZZNYf4flSr6HK4RhtE6svC5k/s1024/alderserving.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="768" data-original-width="1024" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5gpVTmMGlm0FrR1qxyxvcyy3rEU7oABAU6TT5l743X_nR4Pkog560IuE1E-M5CYIQI1PP0d9fhY8lxRijezCU_3d7FygQdqAIap9NtzDDHDTgBrhQr4_ZZNYf4flSr6HK4RhtE6svC5k/s320/alderserving.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>davis awakehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08474955153102246697noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-919199418372917245.post-71448773646692143402020-09-19T21:50:00.001-07:002020-09-19T21:50:44.578-07:00healer's mountain ash<p> </p><p>This mountain ash is one I have pruned a couple of times over the years, and this time I harvested some wood large enough to make some spoons! My idea was to do spoon carving demonstrations each market and perhaps sell some spoons. With everything else going on I only managed to do this a couple times... </p><p>The special thing about this spoon to me is it's simplicity and it's bright yellow color. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-UjDcWUC3KSU4XFBEg-Z3StwrTLvPH5PPKxU_yIGPOG_GGKU7Gpeue1YkDBCJ3D3Ra4Dm2x2vOgbHkJM5wcwROfu5cn00iKU-dBdAWPIQna-JKTlmv8wBSC2ontkna5C-zcVxif0dGXo/s640/autumnolive1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="480" data-original-width="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-UjDcWUC3KSU4XFBEg-Z3StwrTLvPH5PPKxU_yIGPOG_GGKU7Gpeue1YkDBCJ3D3Ra4Dm2x2vOgbHkJM5wcwROfu5cn00iKU-dBdAWPIQna-JKTlmv8wBSC2ontkna5C-zcVxif0dGXo/s320/autumnolive1.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmhV10_q2sCdtB80kG1ctkGnnFMsdc2aOcw2MdQFe6yqo0gLk5kIswj1GQ0_yce4yojwwb9wyQswG9JG4VzQp41iI8wMGm3jyjTX-LHwAHrNa01QrwfLX91bahuLOf5kck4S2bbgkV0SY/s640/autumnolive2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="480" data-original-width="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmhV10_q2sCdtB80kG1ctkGnnFMsdc2aOcw2MdQFe6yqo0gLk5kIswj1GQ0_yce4yojwwb9wyQswG9JG4VzQp41iI8wMGm3jyjTX-LHwAHrNa01QrwfLX91bahuLOf5kck4S2bbgkV0SY/s320/autumnolive2.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilTOWbn7thkQmqtPGpEEdTtD6FK-XcoOjUGcZOiOAosM-luw-huxP9Kl80kev58w38sv1PIdigzMLiM0wzI0jZW0V7w2hGQVSPWz3O_g0XbyJclxnnBgNHd7os2i1k97CZnMVfnKB-xW4/s640/autumnolive3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="480" data-original-width="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilTOWbn7thkQmqtPGpEEdTtD6FK-XcoOjUGcZOiOAosM-luw-huxP9Kl80kev58w38sv1PIdigzMLiM0wzI0jZW0V7w2hGQVSPWz3O_g0XbyJclxnnBgNHd7os2i1k97CZnMVfnKB-xW4/s320/autumnolive3.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPfWEWuWtE6NjCxC-GBne1YvQr7g7TfHyk0nPKQ5AnS_DsiJwP4TtD2jsHoLoCWj8JOn7uiZYd6WloABARoYDIGh988XURAy7hCw4vfttxe4IPNyj-7_fo26gEon1Ffqdne7zHdiUHuNw/s640/autumnolive.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="480" data-original-width="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPfWEWuWtE6NjCxC-GBne1YvQr7g7TfHyk0nPKQ5AnS_DsiJwP4TtD2jsHoLoCWj8JOn7uiZYd6WloABARoYDIGh988XURAy7hCw4vfttxe4IPNyj-7_fo26gEon1Ffqdne7zHdiUHuNw/s320/autumnolive.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><p><br /></p>davis awakehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08474955153102246697noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-919199418372917245.post-74359342357858840172020-09-19T16:55:00.002-07:002020-09-19T16:55:58.620-07:00generosity birch<p> </p><p>This birch spoon I made from a chunk of wood I found in the pile at Sunnyfield is the first spoon I made using the hatchet given to me by Todd Twigg. He found it in a dumpster, and gave it to me at Lopez Winter Solstice 2019. As one of the fire tenders with my brother Lucas I was preparing the kindling by splitting cedar drift wood. The host of the gathering offered me the use of his axes and maul, but there was no hatchet, so this one was very needed. To thank him for his generosity I decided to give him the first spoon born of this hatchet. It has a larger bowl, which matches Todd's big heart. The shape is inspired by the <a href="https://www.casseraartspremiers.com/northwestcoasthornladel.html" target="_blank">horn spoons</a> of the Haida people.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZU0EqpSeJLT4Kcd3soBI0rxL9knaAMTYqCb2QQN70elbwK_OZBmzwW1n90WaJQUQhhjdixwEhL7eknkaB71dCb4t_KX3qp1nVFO0CyIbPsnWD9REqKf9c3Xt4xL812MJQdoWS7S8quj4/s640/birch01.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="480" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZU0EqpSeJLT4Kcd3soBI0rxL9knaAMTYqCb2QQN70elbwK_OZBmzwW1n90WaJQUQhhjdixwEhL7eknkaB71dCb4t_KX3qp1nVFO0CyIbPsnWD9REqKf9c3Xt4xL812MJQdoWS7S8quj4/s320/birch01.JPG" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaFaC3SxbbAx91GxgvyzRvuGXXTXVOCcezNbJwnhnrB-cfR2q7xlh0acgSuqWUM4gSSygf-p4K9LrK-d1Fb3x_6qfIBvmdQbGCVBar0PzVcf3WBS8yd7pHPfONWa2R1bVkPyxpM52r5go/s640/birch02.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="480" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaFaC3SxbbAx91GxgvyzRvuGXXTXVOCcezNbJwnhnrB-cfR2q7xlh0acgSuqWUM4gSSygf-p4K9LrK-d1Fb3x_6qfIBvmdQbGCVBar0PzVcf3WBS8yd7pHPfONWa2R1bVkPyxpM52r5go/s320/birch02.JPG" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjku8yTX-h9L65BHHIwCxRKPRDGpU6KyhC3vMGN3S1IPpcN5Bd6zIcSX62HpIDvKIDD-5TdU5Jp5NxKkX93p-qMCQO6reS-ALByx_oguGXuOv8c5xIsmV6p5Ugh1Gl-3ZGcyM2Tv8fjen4/s640/birch03.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="480" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjku8yTX-h9L65BHHIwCxRKPRDGpU6KyhC3vMGN3S1IPpcN5Bd6zIcSX62HpIDvKIDD-5TdU5Jp5NxKkX93p-qMCQO6reS-ALByx_oguGXuOv8c5xIsmV6p5Ugh1Gl-3ZGcyM2Tv8fjen4/s320/birch03.JPG" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKEdpjF96WoJ9_rlVo-dS8lkF5-mwRFA18Gbp2K-kfTiELXvmbA-zT49zSj9UAHXPa7k4Xnm6Wory9jLxaN30itGVongh16FyhTxLoom8O7-iWKyPipHgpra5tqEuTk6kEMtkjqdZR0To/s640/birch04.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="480" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKEdpjF96WoJ9_rlVo-dS8lkF5-mwRFA18Gbp2K-kfTiELXvmbA-zT49zSj9UAHXPa7k4Xnm6Wory9jLxaN30itGVongh16FyhTxLoom8O7-iWKyPipHgpra5tqEuTk6kEMtkjqdZR0To/s320/birch04.JPG" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>davis awakehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08474955153102246697noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-919199418372917245.post-56045165236272201332020-09-19T16:43:00.000-07:002020-09-19T16:43:15.046-07:00madrona medicine mini-ladle <p> </p><p>One day at the farmer's market in Bellingham I was fondling the hand made slippers of my friend Berkana at her stand and she proposed a trade for one of my spoons! It was an instant YES! and the seed was planted for a very special project that ended up taking more than a year to complete. I tried to document the steps and include Berkana in the process along the way. Many of the images may be lost now... but here are the ones I have from the final stages, where I was finishing the carving of the handle and starting to define the neck of the spoon, where the head of the two-bodied, one-headed infinity snake goes up the back of the bowl. </p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; The tree I harvested a branch from is one of the ones growing in the play yard of a community school I lived next to at Sunnyfield Farm. One day I brought the children over to circle around while I reverently made the cuts. I told them we would see how many spoons I could get out of this one branch! So far I've only completed two from it, but I have a couple more blanks roughed out. </p><p>The design of this one is special as the second one in which I made a continuous plane from the tilted lip of the bowl all the way up the sides to the tip of the handle. Continuity is an aspect I love to work into the spoons in different ways. It speaks of the infinite reality behind all things.</p><p>This one I gave as a birthday gift to a hero of mine named <a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCTZy3Zxr3gzmwF5ElV9jH7Q" target="_blank">Joules Graves</a> when I joined in an improv theatre performance outside the window of her room in the care facility where she was already on lockdown in the first wave of Covid19 in March. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGhzXPdovQOauUIhGZlozpalPN71XrC-fIMABSOEu_D8hRBvxAF-bzy_U0oa3zl1J_tZCgF3MVuj6P6FprF6RZgpv2VeYGeWEQabAKLaufXc05fc9nntNq4IFthOFZRyfGyuwn_HTDBvA/s640/ash01.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="480" data-original-width="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGhzXPdovQOauUIhGZlozpalPN71XrC-fIMABSOEu_D8hRBvxAF-bzy_U0oa3zl1J_tZCgF3MVuj6P6FprF6RZgpv2VeYGeWEQabAKLaufXc05fc9nntNq4IFthOFZRyfGyuwn_HTDBvA/s320/ash01.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>davis awakehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08474955153102246697noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-919199418372917245.post-20255125351810490702020-09-09T17:15:00.005-07:002020-09-09T17:20:36.345-07:00alder a-plenty<p> </p><p>An opportunity to teach spoon carving came along in the Spring of this past year. A friend suggested contacting the <a href="https://chuckanutcenter.org/" target="_blank">Chuchanut Center</a> in Bellingham and when I did they were enthusiastic about working with me to bring this class there. I'd just begun to learn the basics of traditional Scandinavian spoon carving. I decided to use one of my first spoons of this style as a template for the class. That spoon was this small alder spoon I made from a cast off shard I found at the shop of my teacher Walter Henderson on Orcas Island.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJ_G3lN5sH3vTC50T3Ewjpur0jAXD-4lfBpSDAHyyy3anrXorSEm9XuWCbIUXpnyOj28lb_hNxr-T2i4rfHINtVDizg8Dnpq2y5T8lJvgJpkMiNEWGSriqXZZHpqqn_Pfj2ZU7pqRpEVU/s1020/ToastedAlder3.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="765" data-original-width="1020" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJ_G3lN5sH3vTC50T3Ewjpur0jAXD-4lfBpSDAHyyy3anrXorSEm9XuWCbIUXpnyOj28lb_hNxr-T2i4rfHINtVDizg8Dnpq2y5T8lJvgJpkMiNEWGSriqXZZHpqqn_Pfj2ZU7pqRpEVU/s320/ToastedAlder3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgw3_FY2YYUkr4cfHQVAAjImpl_WyyqrebTnRCL2ylN0zBt2o9OiR6VVbIySZoY2xIQCbGCslH-5MUmgkdzSkvxYWCadoyP1-pCewiV9iYRYtOhvExCqV-oaZEHN-_U1QiJOwShYlSOPtQ/s1200/ToastedAlder4.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgw3_FY2YYUkr4cfHQVAAjImpl_WyyqrebTnRCL2ylN0zBt2o9OiR6VVbIySZoY2xIQCbGCslH-5MUmgkdzSkvxYWCadoyP1-pCewiV9iYRYtOhvExCqV-oaZEHN-_U1QiJOwShYlSOPtQ/s320/ToastedAlder4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_jjuzz60BMkNFDtfv8_ZgKLhi0P0bYeI01DDu994fA1cZd6978EugJJSKprKHMPBFse7wx5Xyvn8qO111nvVZlUPH50RzsZVQsPHS82Kw1BNl661Ls5bYmADrqiM8r4VQwTomnb81M_s/s1200/ToastedAlder2.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_jjuzz60BMkNFDtfv8_ZgKLhi0P0bYeI01DDu994fA1cZd6978EugJJSKprKHMPBFse7wx5Xyvn8qO111nvVZlUPH50RzsZVQsPHS82Kw1BNl661Ls5bYmADrqiM8r4VQwTomnb81M_s/s320/ToastedAlder2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1NQ1NTgaTGRTDjo_9PLVDFBCq1J1i2lvGvwv9qGwHU22g9FhYUNUURn3VpXyGz7-31PyX2ZmFL_bdROeT70rYgC0t8u4VVbXx678xb4_f8bFFSBH6o2N5xsZWpp1mw9DusFy1iogFlPk/s1020/ToastedAlder5.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="765" data-original-width="1020" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1NQ1NTgaTGRTDjo_9PLVDFBCq1J1i2lvGvwv9qGwHU22g9FhYUNUURn3VpXyGz7-31PyX2ZmFL_bdROeT70rYgC0t8u4VVbXx678xb4_f8bFFSBH6o2N5xsZWpp1mw9DusFy1iogFlPk/s320/ToastedAlder5.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div>The spoon waited in my posession for months before it finally found it's mate in my lovely friend Matia of Lopez Island.<br /><p>In preparation for the spoon carving class I watched some videos on the internet that demonstrated the techniques used in clear steps to produce the spoon in the most expedient way. The best one I found, which I think I watched after the class actually, is this one by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g26JmIDpO0E" target="_blank">Adam Hawker</a>. Other nspirations at this time were <a href="https://www.turnaleg.com/" target="_blank">Maryanne McGinn</a> and these <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17XtO4sfbi8" target="_blank">Silent Carving</a> videos. My goal was to carve a spoon in two hours, and I devoured the information in these videos with glee, imagining what was possible. Then I began to practice. </p><p>I didn't have much time before the class, and had a sort of marathon of axe work practice at our family place on Orcas, where I stayed for about a week leading up to it. There were young alders in the field there that provided me the ideal wood for this purpose. Alder is easy to carve when green, and hardens up nicely for use when dry. I roughed out about fifteen blanks in a couple days, and selected about the same amount of half rounds for the students to rough out themselves. The class would teach both the axe work and knife work in one session, so I decided to have blanks already axed and partially dried. </p><p>Out of the blanks I roughed out, there were some left for me to play around with. These are some of the spoons that came from that group.They were completed mostly while at the small farm of some new friends in Renton, Washington where I stayed for a couple weeks after my Bellingham stay.</p><p>The pair of larger ones eventually went to my father and his wife. The smaller one I gave to my friend Andy in Bellingham.</p><p>NOTE: the small alder spoon I used for the template was toasted to that darker brown color, and these later alder spoons were not toasted, but simply cured deeply with coconut oil, which left their natural bright tones shining through.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; Life has been taking me through lots of twists and turns, and one of the few things that remains consistent is the spoon making. Some periods are more rich with inspiration and execution, but there always seems to be at least one in the works. </p><p>I am currently living in Fallbrook, California and seeking a loving home in community with others. I've landed at least temporarily with kind christians of Rainbow Community Church. What connected me to these people was my friend Collin meeting a woman in a thrift store and opening up conversation. At my first meeting with these new friends I showed them my spoons. She picked out two of them to buy and let me get a picture of the current collection at that time, about a month ago.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiw6N4IZwXoYFcRFiKq_QXbAySi7r6sC9JqvqgkxUPRerkLZtiCe0-Hd91gGs4g8bsQULLaF3OXJuRE2Vfy5aykVl6Z6ewp91lftwEetxTXE3ewL0x19V_LSbaN5SdrsiO27jTPCzNp1Io/s1008/spooncollection0804.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="756" data-original-width="1008" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiw6N4IZwXoYFcRFiKq_QXbAySi7r6sC9JqvqgkxUPRerkLZtiCe0-Hd91gGs4g8bsQULLaF3OXJuRE2Vfy5aykVl6Z6ewp91lftwEetxTXE3ewL0x19V_LSbaN5SdrsiO27jTPCzNp1Io/s320/spooncollection0804.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p>I'll be posting more pictures from this period in coming weeks. Thanks for looking and please let me know if you want to have a spoon of your own or get one for a friend!</p>davis awakehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08474955153102246697noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-919199418372917245.post-19037401971762882372018-01-27T17:31:00.000-08:002018-01-27T17:31:11.420-08:00black walnut curl<br />
This spoon I made as a trade to a spoon make in San Diego named Al Rodriguez. My brother brought my attention to a <a href="http://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/95228975-132.html"> video</a> of this man making a spoon. I contacted him and he said he would trade me the one he made in the video! This is my first spoon trade if you can believe it.<br />
<br />
The design for this spoon kind of surprised me. I had on my heart to make another spoon similar to the little <a href="http://souperspoons.blogspot.com/2016/04/sisters-spoon.html"> yew</a> one I made for my sister. This one is much larger, but had a similar shape. The overlapping edge on the handle took it in a different direction, but I still feel like these spoons are closely related. Interesting that I was visiting her when I determined to make this trade.

A very sweet friend of my family gave me a ride from Humboldt back up to Portland after I visited my sister's farm in the fall. Ginny would not accept gas money, so I made her a spoon. It is the first one I have made with a hole through it for a cord. I included this cord I'd made in the summer from various animal hairs, including my own. What animal do you think is there on the handle of this spoon?<br />

I got this piece of madrone wood from the trunk of a small tree that I cut in a brush clearing session at my sister's place in Humboldt. At that time I was becoming friends with someone named Katrina by e-mail. When I showed her the spoons I make she said she would like to have one. That matched up with my desire to give her one, and I felt this was the right one to give her because of the time that the wood came into my hands. It also has an elegance that matches her way with language, and the white of it symbolizes the purity of heart I felt in our early correspondence. These spoons can be a reminder to feed each other the spiritual bread that is the best nourishment. That is something I greatly cherish in the exchange with Katrina.<br />

(here is a picture from the first carving stage after rough shaping with a hatchet)<br />
<br />
I have made two of these split spoons with an orb like a seed or stone left in the middle. These were the ones for <a href="https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=919199418372917245#editor/target=post;postID=7161370190368805840;onPublishedMenu=allposts;onClosedMenu=allposts;postNum=24;src=postname"> Andre </a> and Cynthia. This is the second one on which I took out all the wood between the split handle. The previous one I made out of lodge pole pine and gave to Katrina's house mate, Roger. I thought maybe an actual stone or seed would go in the space. I almost sent the spoon to Katrina empty, that she could find a stone herself. I had tried to find the right one but nothing fit or felt right. At the time I was just about ready to send it I happened to join some friends to a beach called Wash-away Beach near Raymond, WA. On this beach were countless small, round, smooth stones to choose from. I didn't find many that would fit the small space of this spoon, but these two seemed right. I had thought it would be a single stone, but two felt better for some reason. I wonder if there is something to that...<br />

I was given a piece of redwood by my friend Joseph while visiting my sister in Humboldt a couple years ago. From the same piece of wood I made a spoon for <a href="https://souperspoons.blogspot.com/2016/05/redwood.html"> Joseph</a> and for Infinite Link (pictures forthcoming).<br />
<br />
I sent out a notice on Facebook at that time to see if anyone would like me to make them a spoon. I got two responses, and one of them was from my old friend Nuria. She was moving to a new house and needed a new tea scooping spoon. When I asked her whether she had any particular ideas for a spoon design she mentioned some woods, but otherwise left it completely up to me. I felt it out and landed on using this piece of redwood that had a big, unusual knob on one end. For some reason I had cut the blank this way... I saw a snail in it and began the rough shaping.<br />
<br />
It is ironic how this project stalled for so long, finally being completed more than a year and a half after starting. It was my slowest process ever. Sometimes I am just waiting for the right energy or inspiration that will push me through the challenging hurdle in the design. The shell was confounding me, but then while I was staying with this community in Raymond recently I found the right peaceful, supportive atmosphere in which to approach it. It was like a floodgate opening!<br />
<br />
When my father saw this spoon finished it might be my masterpiece. I give all the credit to the brilliant one who created me and fills me with life and the power to create. I am amazed!<br />

I had been wanting to make a spatula for a while. My friend Nathan had recently finished one that was pretty styling and I wanted to see what would come through my hands. So when this woman Anna I met at the Orcas ferry landing asked me to make her a camp spatula I knew it was destiny! Soon after putting the wish out there to find the perfect piece of wood for it, my mother brought along a huge trunk of Lilac she had gotten from a job recently. At the base it was just wide enough for this small spatula! Perfect!<br />
<br />
The blank was roughed out with a hatchet at my teacher Walter Henderson's community wood shop. I have been practicing roughing out blanks with a hatchet more lately. I want to get a good hewing hatchet of my own, but any sharp hatchet or ax will do in a pinch. The shop has a couple really nice ones. In roughing out the handle end I saw the face of an animal and tried to bring out the spirit of a fox there. Nobody I asked saw a fox, but someone saw the doglike nose as I had. I suppose it could be whatever you see it as. I have been wanting to try carving a spoon handle in the design of the canoes used by people in the Salish Sea.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbyHv3Fd-eC45_mbT8etKVDn0smPuMLBF0bCVfYkraxoF1ph2gNRW2oz0FPldpOMWEoBXqDcjbfWRNqoPjDcJ0FY50cggW884Fuz6eUBtufDKgOmNaO8VgZOQ9XbELbkVZX96X5NWXbYg/s1600/canoe.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="667" data-original-width="1000" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbyHv3Fd-eC45_mbT8etKVDn0smPuMLBF0bCVfYkraxoF1ph2gNRW2oz0FPldpOMWEoBXqDcjbfWRNqoPjDcJ0FY50cggW884Fuz6eUBtufDKgOmNaO8VgZOQ9XbELbkVZX96X5NWXbYg/s320/canoe.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The design of this handle is largely inspired by this shape, and also just came along through happenstance.<br />
<br />
This was a great pleasure to carve! I want to make more spatula!<br />

When I was at Walter Henderson's community wood shop the other day I found a piece of firewood that was full of pitch. I felt like making it into a spoon, and this is what came through. I almost completed it in that first day. Lots of fun! I gave it to Maggie Clogston to help with her kitchen magic.<br />

When I was in Humboldt helping my sister at her farm in the Spring I had the pleasure of meeting her husband's grandparents and doing some garden work for them. One task I performed was to prune off a large branch from an old plum tree at the entrance of the garden. It seemed to have some good colors inside and I thought maybe I could get some good spoons out of it. I asked if I could take a piece, and said I would make them a spoon from it. Many months later I completed this sturdy beauty.<br />

I spent a few days with my friends the Parypa family and made them this spoon of local alder.<br />
<br />
While visiting them I taught them to make a sour dough bread in the style I know. It involves a lot of stirring and there was no wooden spoon to do it with. I have made spoons for a couple of the children previously, and this felt like an opportunity to honor the whole family by making a tool that would benefit them all. It also felt like a gesture of respect to the mother, who works so hard in the kitchen and deserves beautiful, well-made tools.<br />
<br />
I got excited about showing the children the process of making a spoon from beginning to end all in one visit. We went out on a walk and cut down a small alder tree together that was in a thick stand growing next to the road. The rough shaping was done with a hatchet.<br />
